Bunbuns (Open Canvas practice)
Well, since several months ago I owe 4 people a sketch each via this meme. I've decided I want to do it in OC because I wanted to play around with sketchy application of watercolors. I'm not great with OC, hence the practice with a rough scribble I did during class (yet again)...don't want to shortchange my friends c..c

I literally splashed the color on (as much as one can do such with a mouse), and fuzzed in the background with a few vague washes, so it's not particularly detailed...not that it needs to be.

Anyway, so this character's had a few developments- as you can see I've worked out a vague color scheme (accounting for the fact that this picture is over-exposed to simulate the glare of direct sunlight on a white-sanded beach), and also the details for the costume (see VCL image for more details, or something). I still need to work on the text to go on the leggings, though. And I also worked out a name to go with his now-rather-extensive-backstory: his birth name is Nes, familial nickname Neske, and for some funny reason his public nickname is Chase. Won't bother explaining that either...I feel lazy.

I ought to be doing study.

Edit: Maybe I might go with the original plan and use azure leggings, as opposed to anthracite. I dunno...amethyst?

You do some amazing art, as for study forget study some. Not completely but relax a little and don't rape your mind of required fun time and relaxation as well. Too much study rapes ones mind.

You have quite the VCL art collection, some nice work.

...and some not so nice work, I hear you finish XD

Yeah...I know some experienced artists tend to delete their older work as it appears somewhat shitty compared to later stuff, and I mean significantly, technically wise. I'll be considering just how much to clean up, if any at all, sometime in the future.

Damn that is a cute piccy. For some reason his clothes just scream "take me off!" Suggestive yet clean :)

What do you call that cloth on his package? It looks like the stuff sumo wrestlers wear, and to be honest I forgot the nameof those a long time ago.

In fact it's a loin-cloth! If you look back a coupla posts, you'll find earlier drafts of costuming attempts, where I decided to actually fold the cloth back so that it formed a little bit of a double-sash on the rear. This means there's in fact two layers running over his perineal region (i.e. package and southward etc.) since there's no sash on the front (for mobility reasons).

Yeah...I spent a long time thinking about this costume. So your description makes me happy :)

AH! I remember looking at the first few sketches where he had the greco-roman toga thing going on, I somehow missed the second pic, which is probably why I didn't recognize him from the sketches (lol when my poor facial recognition extends to cartoon characters!).

I can see how the lion-cloth is simply folded back and double- sashed in the back; I'm used to them just hanging so it reminded me of a sumo belt (mawashi, A guess).

Something I honestly never understood that I see more in asianic cartooning is the tendency for... random clothing pieces? I've always found the "one arm sleeve" thing cool, and I see it in anime alot, but.. What the hell is the purpose of that?

The crotchless pants also look delicious. :p

Yeah...that toga thingy was my attempt of combining way too many elements into one...and this is much more, shall we say, attractive.

I know where you're coming from in terms of the "random clothing" but I'm not sure how much of a "real" question this is. It certainly seems alien from our culture but I can spot several historical references- use of single arm sleeves and greaves date way way back, notable examples being the murmillo gladiator, who wore a linen manica on the right arm and a greave on the left leg...this in turn being possibly derived from the style of the Gauls the Romans often took prisoner in conquests through modern-day Western Europe. For a more Asian reference there is also the traditional performance gi of Shaolin monks that I've specifically drawn as a reference point in a previous sketch.

The way I see it, clothes = protection but also hindrance. I kept this specifically in mind when designing Nes' costume, hence the coverage of articular joints is pared down to a bare minimum i.e. the knees and one elbow. Okay...the single sleeve was whimsy :P

Well, you are right- the privateers couldn't afford excessive armor, plus it would slow them down, so they would wear, say, a buckler shield on their left shoulder because that's where a right-handed man would most likely slash them. However cloth sleeves like that I would suspect would be for decoration mostly, because if it was for warmth, you would probably wear both sleeves (or be cold on one side), and unless it was silken mesh, canvas, or some other sturdy cloth, it would most likely protect him from nothing.

Thank you for the examples though. I had no clue.

Um and I'm not saying it's ugly, My initial impression is how fun it would be to undress him, but as my marines once said- crotchless chaps are so gay! (mmmm- delicious)

heh. I looked through your VCL and I actually like your style. Most artists nowadays seem to draw it out and then photoshop in everything for solid color. It's kinda refreshing to see an artist who does everything on paper (micah fennec does it too, but she uses prisma colors). I'm actually tempted to steal a fursona commission from you.

Clothing that offers no protection is no clothing at all. One would be surprised, although yes, a plain cotton or linen would be like +(lim --> 0) def (damnit, where's the character map for epsilon when you need it!!!)

In this case, I specifically thought that the material for Nes' costume would be something sturdier since certain bits are going to be in contact with the ground alot. But I wanted to keep it simple so no sew-on leather patches and the like. Actually...I'm sorely tempted to draw what his costume would look like in modern day materials- think something along the lines of pantyhose suspenders...yes, undressing him...very tasty! :P I know you're not saying it's ugly, don't worry about that. I just have a thorough rationale in mind.

Actually, this pic was done in Open Canvas, which is CG- I don't have the time to do actual watercolor, let alone paints :( I also got a complete set of prismacolors not so long ago, so I may use this in conjunction with my other sets. I didn't know most just did solid color although I do see it alot, come to think of it- I've been heading towards doing more on the computer as time went by but if not using other specific styles, I'll generally be sticking to traditional practices, that seems to be the way I'm going. On that note, I seem to get "actually like your style" alot, which implies 1) people are actually being genuine with the compliment and 2) people don't expect to like my style for any number of reasons...though I wonder what and why.

Whee, commission...or would that be request? The latter has a huge random queue whilst the former hasn't been worked out just yet, but I imagine will take priority.

I don't mind asking for commishes; I've done it before. But it depends greatly on the price and method of payment (check/money order will take a long long time with these damn isles).

" 2) people don't expect to like my style for any number of reasons...though I wonder what and why."

two reasons- it's harder to paint and have it marketable these days because you can "clean up" any picture if you know how to use electronics- similar to how popular sound was on LP's a long time ago, and you remember how you had to be able to sing back then? Nowadays they have CD's and sound engineers who can clean up any crap to be marketable. The fact of the matter is that digitized sound skips several in-between frequency ranges that someone with an ear for music will tell you that analogue (LP) music is more accurate and richier, but these days that's not what sells.

The second reason is because in a free market, what is most frequent is that which sells most. That's why the better the artist, the more commissions you tend to see from them. You are an amateur artist from what I understand, using a medium that rarely sells in furry, and therefore I think rarely sells translates into being an inferior medium. Therefore, people are surprised because they see good quality, marketable work in a rare or inferior medium. So you should feel it's a good compliment.

PS- I've never seen panties that protect anything, except for a person's modesty ^.^
